Lithium-ion Battery Production Plant Study

Background of the Lithium-ion Battery Product Plant Study

The client is from China, and they mine and process coal products. It has a subsidiary, where its main business is the production of anode materials for lithium-ion batteries. In order to meet the demand of European and American customers, the client plans to investigate the feasibility of building anode material plants in Southeast Asia in the second half of 2022. And if it goes well, it may build plants in the target regions of Southeast Asia in 2023 or 2024.

Research Objectives

The client would like to set up a lithium-ion battery production plant in either Malaysia or Indonesia. Products will be exported back to its home country and also sold to other parts of Asia. They would like to find out the best location to set up the plant, and all the other costs for doing so.

Approach

The study was conducted through desk research on the electricity market and business environment of different business parks in Indonesia and Malaysia. Then, it was followed up with expert interviews where we interviewed electricity suppliers in each country, as well as an investment body from Malaysia. The reports were also translated into Mandarin for the client.

Findings

From the research, we were able to identify the most ideal location for the client to set up the lithium-ion battery production plant. This location has the lowest electricity costs as well as having a good business environment. Also, we were able to gather interest from potential suppliers regarding this production plant.

Application

The client will decide if they would be setting up the lithium-ion battery production plant in the selected location. They may also consider conducting a follow up study focused on the selected location.
