Haemodialysis Patients Needs Study

Background of the Haemodialysis Patients Needs Study

Research Objectives

Our client would like to understand how patients experience Haemodialysis (HD), and what factors influence their treatment decisions and overall care journey. The study also seeks to explore the roles and influence of key stakeholders such as caregivers and medical professionals throughout the dialysis process. Ultimately, the client aims to improve the quality of haemodialysis care by identifying current challenges, unmet needs, and opportunities for better support for both patients and caregivers.

Approach

We conducted 6 Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) with a total of 28 participants in Singapore to better understand the experiences and needs of Haemodialysis (HD) patients beyond their primary medical concerns. The participants included a mix of HD patients and their caregivers. Recruitment was carried out using a combination of simple random sampling, stratified sampling, and snowball sampling methods.

Findings of the Haemodialysis Patients Needs Study

Findings

From the results,

  • There is a gap between administrative requirements and patient realities, with systemic pain points in the application process.
  • Multiple factors influence treatment decision-making, but cost emerges as the most important consideration.
  • The orientation programme is an effective preparation for haemodialysis, though targeted adjustments could further enhance the experience.
  • Both patients and caregivers envision several transformative possibilities for future care, with most focusing on practical changes that would enhance their daily experience.

Application

We also provided recommendations to our client based on the feedback we received from the respondents. Some recommendations include:

  • Implement proactive and comprehensive programs to address the emotional and psychological well-being of patients and their families throughout the dialysis journey.
  • Simplify the application process and provide clear, empathetic support to ensure financial concerns are minimised.
  • Strengthen Patient Orientation Programme (POP) to bridge knowledge gap to current treatment realities.
  • Actively seek and advocate for innovative solutions that minimise the burden of dialysis and maximise patient independence.
